In June 2026, the STRUC­TURES Cluster of Excellence welcomed a group of 40 early-career researchers from China for a morning of scientific exchange, discussion, and first-hand insights into life as an early-career researcher in Hei­del­berg. The visit was part of a delegation programme to leading German re­search institutions organized by the Sino-German Center for Re­search Promotion (CDZ) in cooperation with the German Re­search Foundation (DFG) and the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Foundation.

Through a series of presentations, discussions, and two guided lab tours, the visitors learned about the wide range of scientific questions addressed within the STRUC­TURES Cluster of Excellence. The programme also offered a more personal perspective on what it is like to work as an early-career researcher in such an interdisciplinary re­search environment. Informal conversations over coffee and snacks provided further opportunities to exchange experiences, discuss re­search interests, and learn more about possible career opportunities or collaboration partners. The morning concluded with parallel visits to the Synthetic Quan­tum Systems group, and to the Eu­ro­pean Institute for Neuromorphic Computing.

The visitors showed particular interest in the interdisciplinary approach that lies at the heart of STRUCTURES. Coming from a variety of academic backgrounds, they engaged in a lively exchange of ideas and questions. For both guests and hosts, the visit was an opportunity not only to talk about science, but also to exchange perspectives, share experiences and form new connections – reflecting the international and interdisciplinary spirit of STRUCTURES.
