Institutes & Locations
STRUCTURES is a collaboration spanning more than 260 researchers working in the areas of physics, mathematics, astronomy and computer science. The graphic below shows the 13 institutes of our principal investigators (PIs). Recently, two of our mathematics institutes (the Mathematical Institute and Institute for Applied Mathematics) merged into the Institute for Mathematics (IMa). To find a complete list of our members and their institutes, please visit the STRUCTURES team page.

STRUCTURES Building and “Oberstübchen”
On the university campus Neuenheimer Feld, a new building has been constructed to house the European Institute for Neuromorphic Computing (EINC). It is situated adjacent to the two institutes for experimental physics, KIP and PI, and just across the street from Mathematikon, the recently opened new building of mathematics and computer science, where the mathematics and computer science institutes IMa, IFI and IWR are located. The building provides ample space for laboratories, offices, and seminar rooms, as well as a wide open area for events and exhibitions. The university has assigned the third floor of the EINC building to STRUCTURES College. This space, which we call Oberstübchen (German colloquial for brain, literally ‘upper room’), provides offices and meeting facilities for visiting scientists and the fellows, and hosts workshops, regular seminars, and thematic programmes of the college.
Moreover, lab space is also available for new groups performing experimental work in this building. This concerns in particular research on synthetic quantum systems and its relation to neuromorphic systems. The close integration of theory and experiment in research both on quantum and neural synthetic systems is a unique opportunity to create a new focus of research not pursued at any other place in Germany.
The construction of a second new building for the STRUCTURES College is planned at the Philosophenweg campus, next to the grand physics building at Philosophenweg 12.
STRUCTURES Project Management Office
The Oberstübchen also hosts the STRUCTURES Office, which is in charge of managing the cluster resources, reporting, running the visitors and fellows programme, as well as outreach activities and STEPS, our programme to support young researchers and to promote diversity and a family-friendly workplace. Our offices are currently located also in two other locations: At the Philosophenweg campus and in the Mathematikon building at Neuenheimer Feld.
The STRUCTURES Office can currently be found at these three locations:
