DiversityDiversity refers to a broad spectrum of identities and experiences, including but not limited to age, ethnicity, gender identity, race, ability, religion, sexual orientation, neurodiversity, social class, physical ability, religion, nationality, caregiving responsibilities or social background. It recognizes and celebrates each individual's unique background and perspective, acknowledging that our differences enrich a vibrant, innovative research environment.
Equity
Equity involves ensuring fair treatment, access, and opportunities for all people. Unlike equality, which focuses on treating everyone the same, equity takes it a step further by recognizing that people have different needs and circumstances. It aims to provide the resources and support necessary to achieve fair outcomes.
Inclusion
Inclusion means creating an environment in which any individual or group can feel welcomed, respected, supported, and appreciated. It goes beyond diversity to actively involve everyone in the community or organization, fostering a sense of belonging.
Unconscious Bias
Unconscious bias refers to automatic, implicit attitudes and stereotypes that affect our perceptions, actions, and decisions without our conscious awareness. These often unintentional judgments can shape our behaviour in ways that perpetuate inequality without us realizing it.
Accessibility
Accessibility ensures that everyone, regardless of their physical or mental ability, has access to the same opportunities and resources. It includes removing barriers that might prevent individuals from fully participating.
Privilege
Privilege refers to the advantages and benefits that individuals receive based on their social identities, such as ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic status. Recognizing privilege is essential to understanding social inequalities and working toward equity.
Discrimination
Discrimination is the unfair treatment of individuals based on characteristics such as gender, ethnicity or disability. It involves actions or policies that deny equal rights and opportunities, leading to inequitable outcomes for marginalized groups.
