Internal STRUCTURES

FAQs.

Why do I receive emails from STRUCTURES? / Please add my name to the infomail list.

If you entered this internal site, you are either a member of STRUCTURES or of the STRUCTURES Young Researchers Convent (YRC). This is also the reason why we listed you on our mailing lists, such as the Jour Fixe Mailing list, the members or the YRC list. If you did not receive mails until now, but would like to keep up to date with news and events from and about STRUCTURES, you are welcome to let us know!

How does this cluster work? Who is part of the steering board?

The cluster of excellence STRUCTURES explores new concepts and methods for understanding how structure, collective phenomena, and complexity emerge from the fundamental laws of physics. These concepts are also central for finding structures in large datasets, and for realizing new forms of analogue computing. STRUCTURES addresses specific, highly topical questions about the formation, role, and detection of structure in a broad range of natural phenomena, from subatomic particles to cosmology, and from fundamental quantum physics to neuroscience. The members of STRUCTURES collaborate in comprehensive and exploratory research projects, and based on these, also in our research-oriented teaching program. STRUCTURES College plays a crucial role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific exchange. It also bundles research-oriented teaching and outreach activities of the cluster, as well as STEPS, the STRUCTURES Training and Education Program for Success. Read more on the public website...
The Steering Board is one of STRUCTURES committees and consits of the current six members: Manfred Salmhofer, Anna Wienhard, Ralf Klessen (all spokesperson), Markus Oberthaler, Christoph Schnörr (both elected member by the General Assembly), Celia Viermann (YRC Representative). Contacts can be found here.

What is the ‘Excellence Strategy’?

The Excellence Strategy is a funding program initiated by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG. Its aim is to strengthen Germany’s position as an outstanding place for research in the long term and further improve its international competitiveness. It continues the development of German universities successfully begun with the Excellence Initiative by supporting research of the highest standard, enhancing research profiles, and facilitating cooperation in the research system.

How long will the cluster be funded

Clusters of Excellence are funded for seven years (1 January 2019 through 31 December 2025). A second funding period of seven years is possible.

I have a new project STRUCTURES would benefit from. How do I apply for funding?

In STRUCTURES there are several ways how to support a new project or a new idea. One of the most common is to apply for an open call, e.g. for our Exploratory Projects. If there is no current call, you are welcome to contact the STRUCTURES Steering Board members with an outlook of your project or idea.

Staff recruitment in the cluster.

Hiring new staff at STRUCTURES is mainly possible if you belong to one of our funded projects, e.g. the Comprehensive Projects or the Exploratory Projects. Please provide information about the future employee by filling in our internal application form and send it to the Project Management Office.

Invitation of guests for talks, lecturers, short stays as well as research visits lasting several months, etc.

You would like to invite guests to come to Heidelberg? We would be happy to knwo more about this guest. To proceed with your enquiry, please provide his/her cv, a list of important publications (and/or any other evidence of scientific expertise), as well as your personel expectations of this invitation. What benefit do you see for the STRUCTURES community and for the guest him-/herself? You are invited to address your request to the Steering Board or May-Britt Becker.

Reimbursement of expenses during a symposium, reimbursement of travel costs, etc.

You are welcome to get in contact with Cindy Schwäger from the STRUCTURES project management office. She is happy to help you further with any questions concerning the reimbursement of expenses for STRUCTURES members, guests of STRUCTURES, etc.
