Short summary of current research:
We are exploring the interaction of matter, mostly atoms and molecules, with intense fields of light from the infrared/visible up to x-ray frequencies. In bright light of $> 10^{16} W/m^2$ (more than a trillion sun's brightness on earth) electrons can be driven directly by the electric fields of light, rather than by absorbing or scattering light in the form of photons. We aim at understanding these processes to eventually harness them for potential future applications ranging from the control of chemical reactions to teaching atoms how to process (quantum) information on atomic time scales, 10.000 times faster than current computers.
